Kiam mi estis 13-jaraĝa, mi ekinteresiĝis pri lingvoj. Inter la libroj kiujn mi prunteprenis el la biblioteko estis libro de Mario Pei, konata lingvisto kaj multilingvulo. Eble ĝi titoliĝis: All About Language.
Mi ne memoras la titolon, tamen mi memoras klare, ke Pei menciis Esperanton kiel ebla solvo de la monda lingvo-problemo.
Tuj mi reiris al la biblioteko, kaj prunteprenis kvar-kvin ege malnovajn lernolibrojn. Laŭ la aspekto de tiuj kompatindaj libroj kun siaj flaviĝintaj paĝoj, ili longe sidiĝis netuŝite sur la breto de tiu enorma biblioteko.

Cacophony in the EU is the title of this thoughtful, relatively benign article in cafebabel.com. The mention of Esperanto, coming near the bottom of the piece, lacks the usual negative commentary. But what his reasoning is in rejecting Esperanto is impossible for me to understand. But maybe that's because as an Esperanto-speaker I see things very differently from his way of seeing things.

In 1887 a Polish scholar named Ludwig Zamenhof introduced an international language he called Esperanto. It thrived and then languished in the hearts of political idealists, internationalists and dreamers after one-world unity. For a few hours at Town Hall on Saturday night the Absolute Ensemble and some visitors from Lebanon had another try at universality. The program had the title “Absolute Arabian Nights.”
