Antaŭ kelkaj tagoj, unu el miaj antaŭaj studentoj tujmesaĝis min kaj, ekscitege sciigis min ke John Hodgman serĉis iun kiu povas traduki ion Esperante por li. Se vi ne konas John Hodgman, li estas tre konata ĉe mia familio ĉar li ofte aperas ĉe la Daily Show with John Stewart kaj ĉe la televidaj reklamoj de Apple.

Mi tuj respondis kaj li demandis kiom rapide mi povus traduki kaj kiom mi pagigus. Mi promesis fari la tradukon ene de du tagoj kaj petis subskribitan ekzempleron de lia libro, Areas of My Expertise (Fakoj de Mia Sperto). Konsentite, li sendis al mi la tekston, kiu devenas de lia libro -- ĝi iomete temas Esperantan kulturon kaj montris iom da kono de Esperanto. Fakte, jam kelkaj vortoj estis jam en Esperanto, ekz "vera aŭ falsa" kaj "vojo de la krokodilo." Vidu sube por la tuta teksto kiun mi tradukis:

In English we can say, “I brush my hair with a brush and comb my hair with a comb,” which seems simple enough. So why is it that in Esperanto we say, “Mi brosas miajn harojn per broso kaj kombas miajn harojn per kombilo”?

One difference is that in Esperanto the word haro means a single hair, so we refer to brushing or combing our harojn, plural. This is logical, and it’s similar to the way many other languages say it, but a literal translation sounds comical to native English speakers because we say “hairs” only in reference to hairs that are noticeably few and relatively far apart. (Yes, like the ones on the top of my head. Thanks for reminding me.) Someone learning Esperanto might be amused by this, but probably not confused.

The other difference is more puzzling. Why do we refer to the two hair care instruments in question as brosoj kaj kombiloj? Why not brosoj kaj komboj, or brosiloj kaj kombiloj? Why does one require the -il suffix and not the other?

Today Esperanto@UIUC's Esperanto-Week came to a fulfilled end. We met for an hour Monday-Friday over snacks and jollity and worked through a chapter of "Teach Yourself Esperanto" per day. We had two new members who came every day (they should get a trophy--what brave souls) and are now speaking beautifully and clearly learning beyond what the class has taught.

Early registration for the Landa Kongreso ended on March 31. But sign up before May 1st and save $20! We have a great meeting planned with several interesting excursions and lots of opportunity for discussion.
